Imagine having a robot that cleans your house and occupies your kids! Well that's exactly what I got when I invested in the Roomba. I honestly cannot believe how it has changed my family life, it's like having another child join our clan.
Basically I bought it in December as an early Christmas present to myself and at that time my little boy was 18 months old. I think his interest in the robotic vacuum cleaner was probably encouraged by our sheer excitement at this little gadget which zoomed through the house cleaning as it went. We showed it to everyone that came to visit and we talked about it on the phone, so I guess he was hearing all this excited buzz about ‘Roomba’ and it probably made him excited about Roomba too. We refer to Roomba as ‘she’ which is a bit sexist but most people I meet say, it’s got to be a woman.
Anyway, the way it scuttles across the floor probably bares a close resemblance to a little puppy as far as my son is concerned. I thought the novelty would have worn off but after a couple of months he was more enthusiastic than ever and would actually sit next to Roomba, stroking and speaking cutely to it. He started asking for Roomba as soon as he woke up and crying for Roomba as soon as he began to get tired. I then got a little worried and confiscated Roomba for a while but I decided I was just being cruel, I mean what harm could actually come to him from playing with the robotic vacuum cleaner all day long. It’s keeping him amused and cleaning the house at the same time!
Eight months down the line and my little boy is still as crazy about Roomba as ever. He now has a new baby sister, but Roomba still comes first when he’s reeling off the family member names and saying goodnight to us all (Goodnight Roomba, Goodnight Daddy, Goodnight Mummy, Goodnight baby and Goodnight Roomba again!) Apart from doing a great job at cleaning my floors, my little boy has taken to it like his long-lost best friend. He spends hours playing with Roomba, following it around the house and even insists Roomba sleeps in his bedroom.
Even if you don't need a robotic vacuum cleaner, you should consider this as a first-class birthday present for a one to two year old. You can also get cheaper replica models, which would be ideal for this purpose alone.
